Don't follow the crowd; lead the way

A great new book by David Owens on creativity and how the people you hang around with - or as Doc Love would call em "blockers" - can stifle you.

Susur Lee - resilience brings creativity and success

Top Chef Master audience favourite, Susur Lee, shows how to deal with life's setbacks.

Newly immigrated to Toronto after learning the chef's trade as an apprentice at the famous Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong, the young Susur Lee was almost immobilized by the news of the tragic death of his wife on board Korean Airlines. Working through his grief through hard work, he gradually became recognized as one of the most creative chef's in the world. Sounds like a Spartan...

I've Got You Under My Skin - Landau and Sinatra's claasic hymn to NO self-control

Beautiful song but don't live by the lyrics making excuse for loss of self-control over a bad woman...

"i would sacrifice anything come what might
For the sake of having you near
In spite of the warning voice
That yell in my ear

Don't you know, you fool,
You never can win.
Use your mentality
Wake up to reality

But every time I do just the
Thought of you
Makes me stop before I begin
Cause I got you
Under my skin..."

WWYD?

People have been piling on poor Mike McQueary about the perceived actions when he walked in on Jerry Sandusky sodomizing a young boy.

Well, given in society that we may walk into something equally horrific, WWYD?

First, is to protect yourself. Jerry Sandusky was a huge exfootballer so you should watch out.

Secondly, stopping a crime can happen by interrupting it.

The consensus in these parts is that you can throw something at the perp, run off by shouting, "I have called 911!"

And make sure you do call 911.

Crimes should be handled by the police, not your boss.

A Gentleman of the Theatre passes on - you might remember John Neville as Baron Munchhausen

Insightful, talented, witty, another Gentleman... John Neville was understated and applauded.

When you marry a clown, marriage ain't no laughing matter

Or to paraphrase Professor Henry Higgins, "ain't no mystery why a boy can't behave like a man."

Better luck 4th time, Demi.

The Shat is The Man

According to The System, a Gentleman is up to date and has a sense of humour.

Illustrating his place in the zeitgeit, icon William Shatner espounds on the importance of Star Trek in tongue-in-cheek mode... And his banter elicits a fiery response from Star Wars' Princess Leia, writer/actress Carrie Fisher.

Loves the Camera = Not Wife Material

Ouch! Not the most Gentleman-ly thing to do to tell the world via "close friends" you dumped your girlfriend for loving the camera. Guess Alex Loudon refused to look like a wimp as the story initially had Pippa Middleton calling it quits on their 18 month relationship.

Thank God

Wilson Ramos kept his head together during the rescue shootout between his kidnappers and Venezuelan special forces. By taking refuge under the bed in the jungle where he was held hostage, Ramos had Control over his emotions and got out alive.

The Husband of the Week pize goes to Chris Martin of Coldplay

Chris, I am sure your wife Gwyneth Paltrow is thrilled to hear you announce the bosom of Sarah Ferguson, ex-Duchess of York, as your song-writing inspiration.

No way that is being a Gentleman.

Now get yourself under Control.

Ashton, get a hold of yourself this fall!

It was a toss-up who was less of a System guy today - Joe Paterno, Rick Perry, or Ashton Kutcher - but for combining quick draw, Twittering, and not keeping up current events, it is the successor to Charlie Sheen.

The new Two and A Half Men lead actor tweeted his outrage at the firing of famed Penn State football coach, Joe Paterno.

After outraged replies setting him straight, Ashton decided to take down his tweet. Hey, Ashton, get yourself under control! Stick to photos of the soon-to-be ex in her underwear. She needs the strokes after what happened in San Diego during your wedding anniversary sans wife.

A Gentleman never outstays his welcome, Silvio

Silvio Berlusconi is resigning as Prime Minister of Italy after years of scandal, legal action, and economic inattention. A Confident Man of his age would have left earlier, much earlier, as per a Starbucks date. Departing on a high note, he could have had a career as an elder statesman.

Instead we see another Macho Boy hanging on for years by his hangnails, and now living with the ignomy of getting turfed (we are speaking about You, Tony Blair.) Is Silvio's life as a persona non grata better than what was served out to Muammar? Do not be in the position to personally assess that.

Keep in mind, Spartans, better to put the pedal to the medal yourself if they want to drive you away.

A System Shocker: Bogie was a Wimpus Americanus

Or more accurately, he played Rick Blaine as one in the classic Casablanca.

Bogie acted the range from Macho Boy (The Caine Mutiny) to Gentleman (Sabrina) to Wimpus Americanus (The African Queen) in his distinguished career.

That is why our guru, Doc Love, says to watch the CARY GRANT movies, not the Humphrey Bogart film ouevre.

Doc does not want you to act like Rick Blaine, drowning his sorrows because of Ilsa Lund's 49% Interest Level.

Better to read The Dating Dictionary than watch Bogie set a bad example.

Petty - tis a pity

In his review of the Steve Jobs biography by Walter Isaacson, academic best-selling writer Malcolm Gladwell overreaches by bringing Bill Gates into it.

Gladwell's theory for Steve Jobs' success was "tweaking". Refining, editing, incremental improvements rather than discovery or inventing something new. He lists example after example, and the facts are compelling.

In classic "talking past the close", however, Gladwell hits a wrong note by asserting Bill Gates has more imagination just because of his new focus on philanthropy. And chiding Steve Jobs for sticking to the 'narrowness' of technology. That makes as much sense as advising a heart surgeon to a mid-career change into Olympic diving in order to be well-rounded.

Pettiness of this sort does not raise Interest Level, Malcolm.
